Almost 160 companies from the digital industry have taken part in this year’s survey and provided figures. The result is the well-known BVDW Internet Agency Ranking – now in its 22nd edition. mgm once again makes it to 9th place with reportable digital revenues of 79.5 million euros and thus once again among the top 10 in the industry.

Even without a gala or awards ceremony at a live event, it’s a bit exciting every year when the Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) e.V. publishes its annual Internet agency ranking: “How are we doing in the market? Will mgm be displaced by another company and slide down as a result?” This time there was again a reason to be happy at mgm: despite a comparatively small growth, we are still at the top of the nationwide ranking in the eighth year (2022: also 9th place). In the upper top level, the revenue range for digital agency services extends from 79.4 (10th place) to 211.6 (1st place) million euros.

2nd place for mgm in the “platform” subranking

The core business of mgm technology partners is digital platform solutions, preferably based on the low code platform A12. Therefore the view goes also to the Subranking “Platforms”, which is decoupled this year for the first time from “E-Commerce”. Accordingly, second place out of 20 is new for mgm with a fee turnover of 31 million euros for these services in the platform business.

In total, 159 full-service Internet agencies were admitted to the 2022 ranking (2022: 161). After total revenue crossed the EUR 2 billion threshold for the first time in 2021, there was a 16 percent jump to EUR 2.765 billion in 2022 (2021: 2.385). The number of permanent employees in the participating agencies is now above the twenty thousand mark: 22,329 – an increase of 12 percent. The number of employees at mgm increased by 6.4 percent in 2022.

Background to the Internet agency ranking

“The Internet Agency Ranking from the Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) e. V. is the industry barometer of German Internet agencies and has been collected annually since 2001 together with the cooperation partners HighText iBusiness, Horizont and W&V. The figures and an accompanying trend study shed light on a key segment of the digital value chain and provide clients in particular with neutral orientation and guidance for the Internet agency industry.” (Source: www.bvdw.org)

In the BVDW ranking, fee revenues in Germany “in the area of consulting, conception and implementation of online solutions on the Internet/intranet as well as multimedia offline products” are reportable. At the same time, according to the company’s own information, the distribution takes place in three application areas:

  • Digital Transformation and Strategy
  • Platforms, e-commerce and services
  • Digital advertising/communication

The survey is launched in the first few weeks of each year via an online form. The survey is open to full-service Internet agencies that cover several levels of the value chain, i.e., from conception and creation to technical implementation of digital solutions. By signing a declaration of honor, they confirm the accuracy of the information provided. Companies ranked up to 50th must also have an auditor or tax advisor certify their sales figures. If there is any doubt about the accuracy of the information, the balance sheet can be requested for verification.
