Starting July 8, 2025, einfachELSTERplus will make filling out tax returns easier than ever – with an interactive interview mode. As a long-standing digitalization partner of the German tax authorities, mgm technology partners played a key role in implementing this new service.
With the launch of einfachELSTERplus, the tax authorities are introducing a new, user-centered online service: instead of complex forms, citizens can now expect an intuitive, dialogue-based system that guides them step by step through their income tax return. The target group is primarily employees with simple tax cases, such as single people without children, who can now submit their returns easily and completely digitally.

mgm implemented the new offering in collaboration with the Bavarian State Tax Office and other ELSTER partners. Modern web technologies, UX expertise, and proven ELSTER components were combined in agile projects. The focus was on maximum user-friendliness, accessibility, and digital sovereignty. As with other ELSTER projects, einfachELSTERplus relies on a model-based development approach and uses the proven A12 enterprise platform for implementation.
The special feature of einfachELSTERplus is its intelligent guidance through the process: only questions relevant to the individual case are asked. Technical highlights such as pre-filled data (pre-filled tax return/VaSt), intelligent plausibility checks, and immediate electronic transmission to the tax office round off the offering.
Interactive offering with future potential
“We are proud to be part of this flagship project and, together with our long-standing partners, to be implementing another milestone on the path to citizen-oriented and efficient digital administration,” says Sergio Lerena Robles, who, as a member of the mgm management team, is overseeing ELSTER, one of Germany’s largest digitization projects. “With mgm, we have competent support for agile product development at our side. Together, we have taken on the challenge of consistently implementing and further developing the chosen agile development approach,” said Product Owner Katharina Wings of the Bavarian State Tax Office.
einfachELSTERplus marks the beginning of a new era in digital tax administration. The service is being continuously developed with the aim of integrating additional target groups such as married employees and students in the future.
