The Berlin Senate Chancellery’s Low-Code Theme Night is entering its 18th edition and, in partnership with mgm, will be hosted this time by GovTech Deutschland. The event kicks off on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at Max-Urich-Straße 3.
The evening’s central theme: “Shaping Digital Sovereignty to Be Secure and Future-Proof: What Role Does Open Source Play?” Behind this theme lie questions that are currently on the agenda in many government agencies. How can public authorities strengthen their digital sovereignty, and what steps should they take to begin? How can existing IT structures be transformed into resilient infrastructure using low-code? And beyond the opportunities, what are the limitations and risks of an open-source strategy?
Roland Kreutzer, Head of Public Sector Consulting and co-organizer, answers these questions as follows: “Sovereignty begins with an honest assessment of the current situation. What are our processes dependent on? Where is our data located? Who holds our knowledge? Low-code is the lever for quickly transforming these questions into viable solutions, and open source is the foundation for that. Both will only succeed if the organization is on board.”
Insights on Low-Code and AI
Svenja Weber, IT Specialist at mgm, reports on the replacement of Access in Schleswig-Holstein using the A12 AI Low-Code Platform. This case study demonstrates how legacy business processes can be migrated from standalone solutions to a sustainable platform architecture without losing business functionality.
Jan Jikeli, Head of AI at mgm, builds on this and examines the interaction between ESACA and the A12 AI Low-Code Platform. Why are both needed, how do the components interlock, and what does the use of AI in an organization’s own data center mean for administrative autonomy?
The session will be complemented by additional best-practice presentations and the “Open Mic” segment, where all participants can share their own topics, news, or requests for sparring partners in up to two minutes.
Panel Discussion starting at 7:30 p.m.
In the subsequent panel discussion, Markus Michels, Senior Program Manager for Open Source at mgm, will discuss the actually difficult question with other guests and the audience: How does one practically approach a long-term, systemic transition to open source? There are many ways to do this, and that is precisely what makes the discussion worthwhile.
Afterward, the evening will wrap up with a get-together featuring snacks and drinks. Speakers, contributors, and representatives from the Senate Chancellery will be available for discussions.
