The OZG Cloud, an administrative IT system landscape for municipalities and public institutions, continues to gain momentum. In recent months, the mgm project team, together with the commissioning states of Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria, has made further progress and taken the cloud solution to a new level. Christian Thomsen, OZG Cloud project manager at mgm, explains the new, important functions and gives an outlook for the coming months.

Editor: What is the OZG Cloud?

Christian Thomsen (CT): The OZG Cloud forms the technical foundation for digital administrative services in local authorities and public institutions. It enables the end-to-end digital processing of applications – from online submission to the creation of notifications. This is based on a cloud structure with sophisticated automatic support for rolling out or updating individual services and programs. This allows document management systems, registers, or specialist applications to be connected directly. This creates media-break-free processing and significantly reduces the workload for administrative staff.

Editor: Who is behind the OZG Cloud?

CT: Several federal states and local authority associations are driving the development of the OZG Cloud forward – with the support of service providers such as mgm. Schleswig-Holstein and Bavaria are particularly active, working together with their partners on the further development and testing of the OZG Cloud.

Editor: What important innovations are currently available in the OZG Cloud?

CT: In recent months, we have been able to develop and successfully test several new modules. These include, among others:

  • FIT-Connect: A key highlight is the integration of FIT-Connect. This means that the OZG Cloud is already receiving electronic applications from EfA services (one-for-all services). The configuration of delivery points via the admin interface is underway, and sending via FIT-Connect is also about to start.
  • OZG Cloud Bridge: The new OZG Cloud Bridge links cloud services with existing specialist procedures. The minimum viable product (MVP) has already been successfully tested with several local authorities in northern Germany. The Schleswig-Holstein IT Association (ITV.SH) will commission further development as a separate project. Bavaria is also preparing to set up its own working group with BayKommun.
  • Participation module: Another module strengthens the participation of external specialist agencies, chambers, and associations. The OZG Cloud provides flexible interfaces for this purpose. The participation module enables uncomplicated connection to third parties and supports specialist agency participation as needed. The technical implementation already enables participation via company accounts.
  • Electronic notification generation (ED): The new ED module creates the basis for the completely digital creation of notifications – directly in the OZG Cloud. A proof of concept (PoC) has been completed and the connection to the interface is already working. This can currently be implemented via Smart Documents or, in the future, via the mgm A12 Print Engine.

Editor: And what else do you have planned?

CT: Further steps will follow in the coming months: the integration of additional specialist procedures, extended reporting functions, and a configurable administration interface are on the agenda. The mgm A12 Print Engine is also to be integrated in the future to make digital document generation even more efficient.

In addition, the X-Road module, a federated data interface, will be available for use in the medium term. Among other things, it enables a connection to NOOTS and is essential for register modernization. In addition, it is also possible to connect low-code platforms such as MODUL-F or A12.

With each new component, the OZG Cloud is growing into a central building block for administrative digitization in Germany. It not only creates technical possibilities, but also trust in modern, secure, and efficient digital processes.
