What makes a professional Scrum Master?

In recent years, almost all companies have embarked on the path of agility. While some have driven this change quickly and decisively, others have taken a more cautious and gradual approach. Almost every company has either hired scrum masters or agile coaches internally or utilised external experts. The demand for these specialists has been and continues to be high – no wonder, given that it is a demanding and responsible task.

Where can you find really competent Scrum Masters and Agile Coaches?

Becoming a certified Scrum Master does not require a long course of study. A two-day course and an online test are sufficient to obtain the title. Many companies also refer to their Scrum Masters simply as Agile Coaches, especially if they have developed their own agile approaches. Over the past ten years, I have had the pleasure of getting to know many dedicated and smart colleagues in these roles. Many of them are very good at organising meetings, facilitating and moving tasks on a board. Creative and entertaining elements in workshops are a given, as is designing appealing posters.

But is that really all there is to a professional Scrum Master or Agile Coach? Or shouldn’t these roles involve much more? What often makes me wonder is the fact that many people neglect the essential core tasks.

  • When and why do you decide in favour of an agile approach?
  • How can agility be reconciled with traditional project management?
  • Which agile principles and values are decisive and how are they successfully put into practice?
  • How do you optimise processes sustainably?
  • How do you develop a team of individuals who are motivated and productive?
  • How do you sustainably increase the efficiency of a team?
  • And how do you actually coach effectively?

Of course, these skills cannot be learnt in a two-day crash course. But they make the difference between a good and a professional Scrum Master or Agile Coach who brings real added value to the teams.

What characterises an outstanding Scrum Master?

An excellent Scrum Master has in-depth methodological training that includes comprehensive knowledge of visualisation techniques, process analyses and optimisation methods. They organise meetings efficiently and ensure that all participants are treated equally. Through active listening, professional dialogue and a direct approach to problems, he is an ideal mediator between the team, product owner and stakeholders. Our mgm coaches always stand up for the interests of the team and thus create more space for valuable development work.

The ideal Scrum Master does not establish agile practices rigidly according to a textbook, but adapts them dynamically to the needs of the team and the customer. They ensure that the team not only works together, but also develops into a well-rehearsed unit that realises its full potential. In unclear situations, he asks specific questions and intervenes proactively to resolve disagreements together as a team. Our goal at mgm is not only to deliver first-class agile work, but also to support and advise our customers in all aspects of agility. We are happy to be measured by the continuous increase in productivity and satisfaction within the team.
